I don’t think that there is a better way to spend a Friday night then being in an abandoned swimming pool at the bottom of the Queen Mary. We decided to make a night of it, and bring a few microphones and a suitcase full of recording equipment with us to record some creepy sounds. We started the night by having a few drinks at the bar, and walked around the ship trying to find any unlocked door we could find. In the middle of our adventure, we found an open door in one of the ship’s chimneys and snuck in. As we tripped over buckets, bottles and pieces of wood in the dark, we set up some mics and cut a few vocal and clap tracks. We were able to get a few takes in, but eventually ship security came by and asked us what we were doing in the chimney. We told them that we were recording and surprisingly, they let us continue. We did a few more takes and eventually closed up shop and headed inside of the ship. Looking for more unlocked doors and haunted rooms, we walked through the ship’s cabin, snuck through a few passage ways and ended up in the indoor pool area that has been closed for years. The room had a sweet sound and we knew that we were going to have to record in the empty pool. After a few takes we were interrupted by a clan of pre-teen Harry Potter wannabes. We weren’t expecting company at three in the morning, let alone the company of wizards in training. The adult leader of the pack told us that we needed to leave immediately, so we did. As we were leaving the ship for less creepier settings, we stumbled upon Queen Mary’s haunted tour route without knowing it. We saw holograms, fake skeletons and bloody body parts on our way out. The end to a perfect evening. Can’t wait to share the sounds of a memorable night.
