Newzzzzz.

It’s almost that time. The record release is just a little more than a month away and we couldn’t be happier to finally get it in your hands. They came in the mail earlier this week and they look great! We are so proud of it and hope you all dig it. We have an announcement as well. We are welcoming a new member to The Fling. Introducing our van Bethany.

Unfortunately we’ve had to part ways with Beverly after a few years of touring together. We wish her the best but look forward to where Bethany will take us. Literally. The shows lately have been incredible. San Diego was a blast as usual and things got spooky later that night. Let’s just say it ended in a book of bad “dad jokes,” a dog that acts like a human and parties like one and a late night razor scooter session through a wet kitchen. Our last show at Silverlake Lounge was pretty intense too, both performance and temperature wise. It was as hot as a sauna in the desert and it looked like we jumped into a river after the set. Looking forward to the next few shows, especially the show this Saturday in Santa Barbara at Velvet Jones with are good friends Delta Spirit. Can’t wait to head up there and hope that you will too.

April News

Well some good stuff happening in April here. We're mastering the album, working out the details of a release, one music video, one making the album video, probably start posting the new songs, recovering from SXSW, work on getting a new van (goodbye sweet Beverly, we love you), playing a few good shows (Spaceland, Detroit Bar, Silverlake Lounge) and meetings and meeting and meetings. Check the dates, come boogie.

Holograms, Wizards, and the Queen Mary

I don’t think that there is a better way to spend a Friday night then being in an abandoned swimming pool at the bottom of the Queen Mary. We decided to make a night of it, and bring a few microphones and a suitcase full of recording equipment with us to record some creepy sounds. We started the night by having a few drinks at the bar, and walked around the ship trying to find any unlocked door we could find. In the middle of our adventure, we found an open door in one of the ship’s chimneys and snuck in. As we tripped over buckets, bottles and pieces of wood in the dark, we set up some mics and cut a few vocal and clap tracks. We were able to get a few takes in, but eventually ship security came by and asked us what we were doing in the chimney. We told them that we were recording and surprisingly, they let us continue. We did a few more takes and eventually closed up shop and headed inside of the ship. Looking for more unlocked doors and haunted rooms, we walked through the ship’s cabin, snuck through a few passage ways and ended up in the indoor pool area that has been closed for years. The room had a sweet sound and we knew that we were going to have to record in the empty pool. After a few takes we were interrupted by a clan of pre-teen Harry Potter wannabes. We weren’t expecting company at three in the morning, let alone the company of wizards in training. The adult leader of the pack told us that we needed to leave immediately, so we did. As we were leaving the ship for less creepier settings, we stumbled upon Queen Mary’s haunted tour route without knowing it. We saw holograms, fake skeletons and bloody body parts on our way out. The end to a perfect evening. Can’t wait to share the sounds of a memorable night.

Getting down to the end of recording finally. Just doing some overdubs and seeking out some good sounds for a few last touches in churches, basements, parking garages or whatever else we can find. We just posted a video of one of these sessions in some kind of a haunted barn about three miles of a hike into the Los Angeles forest. The link for it is below. Not many shows in December, but once the new year comes around we are going to start whoopin it up again.

Our Detroit Bar Residency is going great. Lots of fun the first two weeks. Thanks to everyone for playing and So Many Wizards for jumping on last minute. Last weekend was a bit intense. A show at The Knockout again in SF on Friday night, then we played our friends wedding up in Mendocino on Sunday where moms were doing kegstands (true story) and things got a little wild. Then we woke up bright and early and drove 13 hours back home to play Detroit Bar. The tired bones are worth it, we had a lot of fun. Record is going really good, can't wait for everyone to hear it. If you're in the area we still got two weeks left of the residency so come on out. The shows are free.

We entered a contest for Conan O'Brien to blow up our van. I think we've actually got a chance at this. Below is the link to our submission video. We'll find out soon if we won or lost. Check it out...

Blow Up Beverly

San Francisco! We love this place so much it's hard to express. Today we woke up, had some coffee in Oakland, then cruised over the bridge for some frisbee golf in Golden Gate Park followed by the Dolores Park Movie Night where we watched Annie Hall with wine and salami sandwiches. A couple of hooligans decided to get naked and jog around the premises while some creeps sang Creep by the the bathrooms. Perfect day if you ask me. We camped a few nights ago hanging out up top old Beverly and watching the meteor shower then woke up and bathed in Lake Shasta. Never felt cleaner in my life. Plus I'm reading The Dharma Bums while camping in the same area that it was written about so....double bonus. Tomorrow night we are headlining The Knockout here which we are very excited about. Couple more days until home, but we're not too anxious to get there right now. The Bay Area is cozy.

Wow. Tour has been insane. Haven't even really gotten on a computer much until now and it's been nice. Some amazing shows, some rotten ones. The Southwest was hot and somewhat dull, but fun. Albuquerque was good. Met some interesting people in Arizona. Denver, well all of Colorado was great. My birthday was on Saturday in Fort Collins and we had such a good time camping out (some of us on the couch, some on the lawn) with our friends from The Knew. Really great dudes. We spent the night chasing each other around on double decker bicycles and woke up to the best biscuits and gravy ever known. Denver at Lion's Lair was out of control. We played a rowdy set to a packed house and stayed in the bar until well after closing time drinking enough to give Dustin the courage to throw an all beef frankfurter at a moving vehicle full of Phish fans. Epic. Idaho was Idaho. Hard to explain. Except Flying M's in Nampa. That show was great. Love Nathan and all the people there. Seattle was awesome. Dodgeball with an exercise ball at 4am and overflowing the rooftop spa. I think we all wanna move in that area someday. We all feel really at home up there. Portland is fun as always. We're here now, leaving tomorrow morning for Oakland. Played a couple of shows, met some good people, stayed at the Ace Hotel which is rad and met up with some of our girls plus we ate at my favorite restaurant, Montage. Good times. We've got tons of photos that we'll sort out and post once we get home.

Here we go. Summer tour starts tomorrow. Can't wait to get back to some of these cities and see all our friends again. We've got some really good shows booked so come on out and say hi, if we don't melt. There is no AC in the van. Ouch. We'll manage. Ten bonus points to the person who brings us one of those little fans that mist at the same time. See you soon.

Just finished up some new versions of Out Of My Head and Wanderingfoot that we are really happy with. We're giving them away as free downloads to everyone. Just send us a message to

theflingband@gmail.com

and write "free songs" in the subject and we'll add you to the mailing list as well as give you the links to the downloads. Working on the full length, going really well. Planning this summer tour is insane, but it will be worth it once we hit the road and get to the fun part of actually playing music. Here are some photos from a backstage singalong session with Red Cortez at the Yost Theater with Cheez-Its and whiskey. Vibes.

New songs, new posters, new socks. We've all been working hard trying to set up another tour for July/August. Heading back out to do another western half of the US tour. Been enjoying playing a lot of local shows lately with The Rosewood Thieves, Red Cortez, We Barbarians and a whole slew of other great bands. We've been working on the full length, doing a song or two a day when we get the chance and we are having a lot of fun as well as learning some studio trickery. I think it's a unanimous decision that we all love working with an outside man and playing live when it comes to recording. Just feels better. We be posting some new soon...check.

We've all had a couple weeks now to hang out with our girls and our friends again in Long Beach as well as make a little money at our jobs so we are ready to get back to playing some shows and recording. We are going to be playing some more local shows for the next couple months while we plan another tour for late summer and start working on our full length. After that it is back out on the road for about a month. Coming up on Thursday is an acoustic set at the Art Theater here in town, then May 5 we are playing Detroit Bar with Parson Red Heads.

We're back home now. After Denver we went to Nampa, Idaho and had a great time at Flying M's. The sound guy took us out for a round after the show. Bonus. Then we got snowed in again in Eastern Oregon, so the lady at the Oregon Trail Motel let us trade her an autographed EP for free breakfast. Double bonus. Seattle, Tacoma and Portland were fun. The set at Comet Tavern in Seattle was a little rough on account of busted cables and being sick and everyone was really tired. Not to mention there are no monitors, so you can't hear what you're singing. Which is especially bad for the sickly. But we had a good time nonetheless. Thanks to all the bands for helping us out. San Francisco was insane! Really fun show. We all really enjoy playing that city. We all go nuts after the shows in that city. I don't know why. There is just something about SF that makes people want to get weird. The three weeks we were gone went by really fast and slow at the same time. Really strange and amazing experience for all of us. Sorry for the lack of updates. I was incredibly sick the whole last week of the tour. That and we really didn't have a lot of downtime. But we are back in Long Beach and happy to see our girlfriends and our showers. I don't expect it to be very long until we get the urge to do another trip though. We all got used to living like road dogs and now we're having a hard time adjusting to sitting still. Colton and Ivey's brother, Dylan, took some great photos. We will post those as soon as they all get developed. More shows this weekend in LA and in town. Easter Sunday at Alex's!

Yep. Blizzard in Denver. We're stuck here but there just so happens to be a jacuzzi and a couple cases of Modelo. Huge thanks to our new friends for letting us crash while the storm blows over. The highway to get to Utah is closed until midnight so we are going to wake up early and head out to Salt Lake City once the roads are clear. This is the only way to get snowed in.

In Denver right now. Supposed to get an extreme snow storm in about two hours that will pretty much keep us here for a full day. Luckily, we have tomorrow off so we should be able to make it to Salt Lake City on time. Lawrence, Kansas was great. After the show our friend Yuri took us to his house, which is on the William S. Burroughs compound and I got my copy of And The Hippos Were Boiled In Their Tanks signed by James Grauerholz, who wrote the afterword and was a close friend of Burroughs. We talked for a while about the Beat Generation and the modern world and the importance of tangible objects, so needless to say I was excited. We stayed the night there and woke up and attempted to learn to play the accordion and trumpet in the living room, but Yuri proved to be the only adequate trumpeter. After lunch at Aimee's we headed out to Kansas City, Missouri and played a show at Czar Bar. The crowd was pretty small, but they were such good people. They took really good care of us there and we are all looking forward to making another trip out there soon. The show tonight at the Larimer Lounge in Denver was great. Lots of people, lots of energy. Everyone had a good time. Here is a picture of me in Burroughs yard reading his book. Dig.

SXSW has been amazing so far. Grizzly Bear/Dinosaur Jr. show was the highlight for sure. We snuck in backstage on accident just trying to get a view of the show and ended up being able to talk to Daniel from Grizzly Bear about the new record. Amazing! Got pulled over at the Texas border and had a professional drug sniffing dog search the car for drugs and miraculously found nothing. We filmed a video for "Wanderingfoot" out in Joshua Tree that should be ready to view soon. Our driver/photoman/lumberjack took the red-eye out here this morning with Kanye West. No joke. Got a picture of him right after he took a hot shit in the Austin airport. We'll post it when we get a chance. Lots of beer, barbeques, and great bands. Tomorrow morning we are heading up to Lawrence, Kansas.
